New chiral α-aminophosphine oxides and sulfides: an unprecedented rhodium-catalyzed ligand epimerization

International audience; New chiral α-aminophosphine oxide N,P(O) and sulfide N,P(S) ligands have been prepared in one-pot syntheses by addition of Ph2PH to (S)-PhCH[double bond, length half m-dash]NCH(Ph)CH3, followed by oxidation with O2 or S8. Crystallization from cold methanol leads to the isolation of an enantiomerically pure single N,P(O) diastereomer and to a 1 : 1 mixture of the two N,P(S) diastereomers. The coordination chemistry of these ligands with [RhCl(COD)]2 and [RhCl(CO)2]2 has been investigated under argon and syngas. α-Aminophosphonates, -phosphinates, and -phosphine oxides are a group of organophosphorus compounds that were investigated as extraction agents for rare earth (RE) metals and actinoids for the first time in the 1960s. However, more systematic investigations of their extraction properties towards REs and actinoids were not started until the 2010s. Indeed, recent studies have shown that these α-amino-functionalized compounds can outperform the commercial organophosphorus extraction agents in RE separations. Benson group additivity values of phosphines and phosphine oxides: Fast and accurate computational thermochemistry of organophosphorus species

Composite quantum chemical methods W1X-1 and CBS-QB3 are used to calculate the gas phase standard enthalpy of formation, entropy, and heat capacity of 38 phosphines and phosphine oxides for which reliable experimental thermochemical information is limited or simply nonexistent. For alkyl phosphines and phosphine oxides, the W1X-1, and CBS-QB3 results are mutually consistent and in excellent agreement with available G3X values and empirical data. In the case of aryl-substituted species, different computational methods show more variation, with G3X enthalpies being furthest from experimental values.
